Here
is a little fun post where an Enterprise customer of ours was asked to
articulate the value of the peer-to-peer 2Pint Software Solution (StifleR) to a team of
90 people across different technical domains, and instead of using a PowerPoint,
a story was told…
"I
could start to present a lot of PowerPoint slides. Talk about how it works
behind the scenes,
but you'd fall asleep. So instead, let me tell you a
story!"
The
Story
Imagine a school class of 25 kids in the age before computers. They have Xerox
machines though and we're just going to ignore the fact for a moment that it is
not legal to copy books.
One day Paul thinks, oh I want to read The
Hobbit. But Paul does not have the book, so Paul asks the class, hey does
anyone have The Hobbit? No one answers, so Paul goes
to the library and picks it up. (This is like installing an application
from Software Center)
The next day in school, John also gets the idea that
he wants to read the Hobbit too. He asks the class "Hey, can anyone give me a copy of the Hobbit? Paul has it, so he says sure, and
gives John a copy.
(Second person to install the same application)
A couple of weeks go by and ‘Tolkien Mania’ is spreading in the class. They all really like his books. George is
really excited about it,
so he asks the class, hey anyone have Lord of the Rings?
Melanie says: I have The Two Towers. You can have a
copy!
Emma says: I have The Fellowship of the Ring!
Nobody has The Return of the King, so George must go
to the library and get it. (Files can be split, they do not all have to
come from the same source)
One day, the teacher Victoria, says to the class. You
must ALL read 1984. (This is like us mass deploying updates for instance)
The kids start asking each other if they have 1984.
Nobody has it. But as the teacher told all of them to read it, they all rush
for the library.
BUT at the door they run into Mister 2Pint Software or Mister
2PS known by his friends.
Mr. 2PS realizes that if they all go at
the same time to
get the book, they will just end up queuing at the library, oh and stressing out the librarian. That wont work!
Mr. 2PS then says, Geri, you are the
most physically
fit. You can run into the library and
pick up 1984 and then share it with the rest of the class.
That's the story about sharing content.
As we are using a school class as an analogy, then of
course there is a test. In the story, names were used. They are from 2 famous Pop Groups. Which ones? Send
me your answers and I will be sure to buy a round of Pints when we next meet!
Closing:
So, what is 2Pint Software’s SifleR? It is an application that controls and monitors the peer to peer
sharing technologies that are already built into Windows and means we can go from more than 65 distribution points to less than 10…and support even
more locations.
From an anonymous (but happy!) 2Pint customer
